Music Therapy Clinical Internship
The Life Enrichment Center Music Therapy Internship is a university-affiliated internship program that partners with Georgia College & State University to meet the rigorous requirements of the American Music Therapy Association for a student to complete their clinical training program. The intern will gain their working music therapy experience serving adults with intellectual developmental disabilities in The Life Enrichment Center (LEC) Music Therapy Program. LEC Music Therapy Internship components include but are not limited to on-site group and individual music therapy services, Creative Expressions Performance Groups, and numerous community partnership events and activities that occur throughout the year. The intern will have the opportunity to work and interact with therapists, paraprofessionals, teachers, parents, caregivers, direct care staff, administrators, support coordinators, interdisciplinary teams, and more.
Over the course of their program, the intern will gain professional experience with adults possessing a wide variety of diagnoses including but not limited to Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s syndrome, Williams’s syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, communication disorders, sensory impairments, dementia, schizophrenia, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. LEC interns will experience the practice of music therapy in a non-profit setting in one of Georgia College’s longest-running community partnerships.
The intern will study under guidance of the On-Site Supervisor: Jay Warren, MMT, LPMT, MT-BC, the Music Therapist and Activity Director at the Life Enrichment Center. The On-Site Supervisor operates in partnership with the GCSU Academic Internship Supervisor: Katie Whipple, MMT, LPMT, MT-BC, presenting an internship that meets the AMTA requirements for university-affiliated internship programs and the coursework requirements for graduation from the GCSU Music Therapy Program.
It is the aim of the Life Enrichment Center Music Therapy Internship that, upon completion of the program, the intern should be practically prepared to enter the field of music therapy.
